What we collect, why we collect it, and how to make us stop.
Last updated: 25 October 2026
Shanghai Journey is a small operation. We do not run a database of visitors, we do not sell anything about you, and we do not want your medical records sitting on our laptops. This page explains the limited amount of information we do handle, in plain language.
Who we are
Shanghai Journey (shanghaijourney.com) is an independent English-language guide and accompaniment service based in Shanghai, China. For anything on this page, the contact is:
Email: service@shanghaijourney.com
Registered address: No.40, Tiyuchang Rd, Qingpu, Shanghai, 201600, China
What we collect
1. Information you send us
Our contact form does not store submissions on this website. It composes an email in your own mail application and sends it from your account. Whatever you write in that email arrives in our inbox, which typically means your name, your email address, and the details you choose to include.
If you are asking about medical accompaniment, you may choose to tell us about a diagnosis, a hospital, an appointment date or a prescription. That is health information, and we treat it as sensitive: we read it to answer you and to plan the visit, we keep it only as long as the engagement lasts plus a short period for follow-up, and we do not put it into any marketing list or share it with anyone other than the provider involved in your care.
2. Technical information
Like almost every website, our server records basic request data β IP address, browser type, the page requested, the time. This is used for security and for detecting abuse. We also use Google Analytics (through Google Site Kit) to understand which pages are read, which is aggregate and not used to identify individuals.
3. Cookies
Cookies on this site fall into three groups: those needed for the site to work (session and security), analytics cookies set by Google, and advertising cookies if advertising is displayed. You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings; the site will still work, though your preferences will not be remembered.
Why we are allowed to hold it
Where data protection law applies to you, we rely on: your consent (when you email us), our legitimate interest in running and securing the website, and, for medical details, your explicit consent given by choosing to share them in order to receive the service you asked for.
Who else sees it
We keep this list short and honest:
- Hostinger β our hosting provider, which stores the site and its server logs.
- Google β Analytics and Search Console, and advertising if ads are shown. Google may set cookies and process data outside China; see Google’s privacy policy.
- Your email provider and ours β ordinary email is not end-to-end encrypted, so please do not send passport scans or full medical records by email unless we ask for them specifically.
- Hospitals and clinics β only the details necessary to book or accompany you, and only with your knowledge.
We do not sell personal information, and we do not share your email address with advertisers or list brokers.
Advertising
This site may display advertising served by Google AdSense or similar networks. Those networks use cookies to show ads based on your prior visits to this and other websites. You can opt out of personalised advertising at Google Ads Settings, or manage cookies more broadly at aboutads.info. Advertising does not influence what we write: we do not accept payment for a positive review of a hospital, clinic or restaurant.
How long we keep things
- Enquiries that do not lead to a booking: deleted within 12 months.
- Enquiries and records relating to a booking: kept for two years, then deleted, unless we are required to keep an invoice for longer under Chinese tax rules.
- Server logs: rotated by the host, generally within 30 days.
- Analytics: retained in aggregate; we do not build profiles of individuals.
Your rights
You can ask us to show you what we hold about you, correct it, delete it, or stop using it. Email service@shanghaijourney.com and we will respond within 30 days. If you are in the EU or UK you also have the right to complain to your local supervisory authority; if you are in China, to the relevant cyberspace administration.
Children
This site is written for adults. We do not knowingly collect information from children. If you are arranging care for a child, the enquiry should come from the parent or guardian, and we ask only for what is needed to book the appointment.
Changes
If this policy changes materially, the date at the top changes too. We do not notify readers individually; the current version is always this page.
